Should I be a Fireman?

I am 16 right now and would like to go to college, get a degree in fire science, and be a firefighter. My Mom doesn't want me to be one because she doesn't like the idea of raing a hopefull family of 6 on the low income. Any suggestions?? i could always do something else with a degree in fire science to. And also do you think firemen are cool? i think they are the most selfless people out there.
