Guitarists, is it just me or are lipstick pickups very difficult to get overdrive tones out of?

The only electric I have is an Ibanez Talman electric guitar with lipsticks and although they sound great for clean tones, I seem to have a hard time tweaking it for distortion tones. Is it just me or is this a well-known fact?
